Color me curious. I see a lot of artist complain about how hard it is to make money with their art but I have to wonder how many of them have a real business plan to begin with? For the past couple of years I have been trying to put together a business plan that would allow me to make money doing what I love to do. Like it or not, making art is either a business or a hobby. If it is a business, then you need a solid plan to guide you through all the multitude of small details of running a business. (If it is a hobby, then you need a real job.) I wonder if anyone here has had any luck coming up with a plan to making money from their art?

Re: Business planning?
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 8:25 AMI've help dozens of artists make business plans and I've seen several of them successfully applied.
And yes, there is a big difference between being an artist, and operating an art business. It's sorta like the difference being a chef and owning a restaurant.
Remember, artists are mystics. So generally, the mystic would rather channel energy into beautiful creations. Where as business, or business plan lean toward the magicakal side. As such, trying to get mystics to act like magicians can be quite challenging, however, it's not impossible. Where there's a WILL there is a way....

Re: Business planning?
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 6:52 PMWell Wolfgang Puck is a chef and a successful restaurateur. I don't really buy the idea that great artistic talent disqualifies you from having good business sense. Maybe creating art requires tapping into some deep mystic source of creativity, but coming up with a business plan shouldn’t. Granted, it is not easy or fun or springs from our lips like poetry. But I think it odd that we can be creative in making our art and then just stop when it comes to what we should be doing with it afterwards. -

actually.....the best art businesses are teams. an artist and a great business mind. rarely are they the same person. although...it does happen. my friend robb havassy manages to do both (www.havassyart.com)...but in my case, sinclair (www.sinclairstratton.com) was the artist and i was the business and we managed to sell quite a bit of art over that past 5 years. so, if you can't do it yourself...find your ally.
