Tell me...

...how do you see this tribe evolving?
...what (more) do you want from it?

Let me know and I will do my best to meet your needs.

Thanks!

Lately I don't see Tribe as evolving as it seems to be decaying. I don't see much discussion going on. It's getting kind of boring.

Alright. Are there any topics you would like to see brought up?

I'd like to hear how other people handle the business of art? What ideas do the have for marketing and promotion? What problems and difficulties do they have. How do you balance the time you need making your art with the time you need to sell and market your art? If you are an illustrator, how do you deal with the realities of a global market where art directors can hire someone cheaper overseas? If you are a fine art painter how do you price your work so that you can make some sort of profit after the gallery takes it 50% and still keep it priced for your audience. Should you even consider that? How do you as an artist afford Health Care? Have you ever been dump by a girl (or a guy) because you were an artist and thus would never have the time (or money) for them?

Business, Art, topics that hit on both would be nice.

I like where this thread is going. I agree with you James.

"I'd like to hear how other people handle the business of art?" I hate it for the most part, but then again I'm not what I'd call a successful artist.

"What ideas do the have for marketing and promotion?" That is wholly dependent of what kind of art your doing. I do erotic art so any advise I could give on m and p would be a waste of time.

"What problems and difficulties do they have." Selling.

"How do you balance the time you need making your art with the time you need to sell and market your art?" When I'm not doing one I'm thinking about doing the other.

"If you are a fine art painter how do you price your work so that you can make some sort of profit after the gallery takes it 50% and still keep it priced for your audience." Double what you need to make.

            Not to me it wouldn't.

My work has been running is a slightly similiar vein (I've been doing Pin-Ups). For the past couple of years I have been researching venues where I could best show my stuff. I find the problem with the erotic art market is that it is very narrow and shows little chance for growth. So I have been looking at stuff like Tattoo shows. The whole Tattoo market is growing and yet still allows for more adult content.

Sorry, I failed to look at your stuff. It's very good.

I agree with you about the erotic art market. Its not taken seriously by art dealers because of the stigma that comes with erotic. There are erotic art contests and shows like the erotic signature book thingee, the dirty show in detroit, tom of finland show in weho, etc...

Working in 2d like you are, at least you can sell smaller prints at art shows, glamour shows, comic book conventions, venice beach boardwalk perhaps? I'm sure you've thought of these already.

I've done a bunch of comic conventions but not with any real success. Unless you are a name or worked on a book that has some name recognition (like Spiderman) it's tough to generate enough interest to translate into sales. Another artist, who also does pin-up, told me that you can't build a fan base one person at a time. At one point you have to do something that reaches more people than you do at a show. I'm currently working on a self published collection of my stuff. It may not make me a ton of money but I hope that it raises peoples awareness of my work. At least higher than zero.
