I'm working on my website because it needed serious updating.
And I was wondering.. I have seen plenty of art websites where they have all their art pictured, but there are no prices listed.
Why? What is the advantage of that?
Do you do that so people contact you and you can make up a price on the spot?

Re: prices on website
Thu, November 29, 2007 - 5:44 AMWell, I don't because I have a site I pay for at GeoCities, but I am not sure that I am supposed to actually use it as a business site, or I would have to pay considerably more for the pleasure.
I badly need to update mine too - or scrap it, as I do not really know how to make proper thumbs and don't really get much visitors anyway. I am not sure if Deviant, Reb Bubble, Saatchi et al are the answer either though. Sounds great - getting my art seen in those parts of the world I cannot reachother than virtually - but maybe it is just a hope and not much more. -

Re: prices on website
Thu, November 29, 2007 - 7:02 AMWell, I get about 2000 visitors a month. So its doing something:-) Then I'd better give them something to look at.
You can always make whatever site. Its just when you want special features or more space to post pics that you have to pay more. They just call that "business" because you have those special features. Like shoppingcart.
Thumbs can be re-sized pics through photoshop or via the website itself. 130 pix. -

Re: prices on website
Thu, November 29, 2007 - 11:44 AMI pay for the extra space, as I had oo many to kep my website free.
I would say that 2 000 visitors every month is definitely doing something.
PR is not my forte, not in any area of my life unfortunately. -

Re: prices on website
Sun, March 9, 2008 - 2:06 PMI don't think the internet (a personal web page) is a place to sell paintings, personally. I put pics up there for :
1. people to review what I kind of work I do,
2. introduce myself to new clients
3. to review myself, what I titled things or the dimensions of a piece I did - often I'm in a pinch and traveling...
4. to come up on search engines
5. Galleries appreciate when they don't have to dig too far for a quote or artists statement... it's right where they can find it.

Re: prices on website
Sun, March 9, 2008 - 7:48 PMI agree with Karine. Websites are most important for PR, art statement, gallery, that sort of thing.
But, it is a little different if you're selling items like prints that have multiple editions. You could set up an easy shopping cart for items like that.
I don't have any prints I'm selling right now so I don't have any prices up. I have a lot of large pieces and I like to be flexible with prices so I do not list the price on the site. If someone is interested enough to buy something then they can contact me and I'll send them a price.
I agree with Christopher too. I don't want the cost to interfere with how the viewer feels about the work.

Re: prices on website
Mon, March 10, 2008 - 1:08 AMI have a so-called Plus plan with my website at Yahoo and am simply not sure about what I can actually do viz a viz doing business from it. I don't want to end up paying any fines if I put prices on my picutes and then find that I have transgressed some rule that was in the small print.
I am not aure that it would be possible to sell anything through my site anyway, though I did get some Tarot cards published through having it up when someone saw them.
How to make my site more professional-looking...well, doh. -

Re: prices on website
Thu, March 13, 2008 - 9:40 PMIt is so hard b/c there are so many different opions about online sales. On other tribes people have talked about thousands of hits but no sales. I personally have my prices on b/c I hate to not know when I am looking. -

Re: prices on website
Fri, March 14, 2008 - 5:22 AMI think web sites are good if you are selling smaller, lower priced items (like prints and postcards). Larger pieces you have to deal with things like shipping, insurance, etc. I think that may be one reason why online sales haven't been that great for art. I tend to agree with those that think that anything 100 dollars and up isn't going to sell on a web site. -

Re: prices on website
Fri, March 14, 2008 - 10:42 AMAs a single mother the internet is one of the few sources out there for advertisement without to much investment. It is true that insurance and shipping make it more difficult. I think are other opportunities that websites introduce, i.e. affiliates.
