Re: New Members: Introduce Yourselves Here, Please
Mon, February 11, 2008 - 12:09 PMHi,
Eric here. I'm a figurative artist from Phoenix. I participate in local First Friday artwalks from time to time. Eventually I'd like to move beyond the limited markets of First Fridays, which have become more music driven and teen hangouts. I have done quite a bit of marketing and customer service work in my day job. I have a pretty good understanding of land surveyors and civil engineers, but havn't been able to wrap my head around art gallery marketing. -

Re: New Members: Introduce Yourselves Here, Please
Mon, February 11, 2008 - 5:32 PMI'm Michael Goettee (Mike) and have been a graphic designer and art director since the dawn of dust. I've also been painting off and on for years with my first gallery piece selling in the mid-80s to the Columbus Museum of Art, a surprisingly impressive museum in Columbus, GA. Since that time, the day job has reigned along with fear of missing the house-note. Even with that early acknowledgment that my art was worthy of being taken seriously, I never took the "Follow your bliss" plunge. Well now I'm testing the waters.
Currently, I've negotiated and achieved a four-day work week in design and have been going about the business of taking my fine art more seriously. Through the Avondale Arts Alliance membership here in the Atlanta area, I've been hosting monthly Artists Coffees for the last year to provide a place, like this one, for artists to share ideas and ways to sell their work. My fine art page is at maxglitz.home.mindspring.com/por...html -

Re: New Members: Introduce Yourselves Here, Please
Tue, February 12, 2008 - 12:26 AMWell I am not really new.
I have a website with my artwork at
www.geocities.com/lyndastevens
Just go to he 'artwork' secion, or to the tarot cards section if you want to see my figurative artwork there. Mainly my work s abstract though.
As to what I hope to be able to get ouf here, it is to get more ideas on wat actually might work regarding getting my artwork to the public and actuaky sellng something. It may just sound like a sad ego speaking, but I don't want tsomething I have put so much into over the decades, just falling into stony ground. I do not live in an especially artist-friendly place and have not been to any prestigious schools and it can be easy to write off my work as being decorative or whatever.
Obviously I can occasionally give feedback to other artsits, if I like the work I see. -

Perhaps you would also be willing to give feedback to all artists; regardless if you like their work? This might be more helpful to everyone...to be able to allow them some outside perspective.
Just something to consider.

Re: New Members: Introduce Yourselves Here, Please
Tue, February 12, 2008 - 6:03 PMHi ya all, my name is James Courtney and I'm an illustrator and photographer when I'm not doing my day job as pre-press artist for a small printer in Livermore CA . I'm a graduate of USF and The Academy of Art College with a BFA in Illustration. My current passion is creating pin-up art with adobe illustrator and doing photo shoots with various models from Tribe. I joined this tribe to get some idea on how to better do the business end of art. -

Re: New Members: Introduce Yourselves Here, Please
Tue, February 12, 2008 - 7:00 PMFeedback can be sticky. Fine art can be so personal. I'd suggest a thread that invites artists to ask for feedback rather than one like this one where folks introduce themselves and give links to their work. I can remember occasions sitting in a conference room for the day job design stuff and having these critiques that became popularity contests and were more political than productive. Be careful. Allow great comfort room here for those that want to present their work and also give space to those who want the feedback when they ask for it. -

Re: New Members: Introduce Yourselves Here, Please
Tue, February 12, 2008 - 8:30 PMI think this is true. I don't think that this thread is the time nor the place to hold critiques. I was just pointing out that if there are people that would like feedback...it might be good to help them regardless of liking their work. It is a chance for all participants to grow.

Tue, February 12, 2008 - 7:02 AMMy name is John Davis. I am a Illustrator, cartoonist, I also am an art director at an advertising firm. I do the occational illustration for ads and story boards but my personal intrestes are more to the fanatsy art and cartooning. It seems harder and harder to get the client to pay for custom illustrations now days, but it's nice when I get a chance to do something fun. I joined this group to network and see what everyone else is doing in this feild.

Re: New Members: Introduce Yourselves Here, Please
Tue, February 12, 2008 - 7:15 PMHello everyone, I started painting when I was forty, with teenagers in the house and a full time job.
Eventually they grow up, and menopause started...and thats when paint got slung around a lot.
I thought perhaps it would be a good idea to manage some other artists's careers? And a few thousand dollars and one month later, realized that I had no true calling for pulling that off from the ground...then i met Johnny Davis of ARTworkSF, who has been doing it for 15 years now. So, I went to work for him.

Re: New Members: Introduce Yourselves Here, Please
Mon, February 18, 2008 - 10:49 AMMy name is Luis Daniel Gutierrez. I have had international one Man exhibitions in Berlin and London. I currently have four works on paper traveling in a group exhibition in Japan.
My work is currently on display at the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona in an exhibition titled Remix: new Modernities in the age after the Indian. That exhibition shows until April. The exhibition then re-opens in New York City in June 08.
I also show relentlessly in Phoenix's First Fridays events and survival galleries when ever they pop up. I like the thriving underground that art sales provide. Its a charm to sell work from the roadside.
I am here to find out if anybody else has info for me. I have made it a point to make sure my own style, voice and work is all mine before I venture out to get a gallery to sell from. I have to say that I have had a good time making up my own rules about how and when to show. I do think, however, that it might be high time to get into a few galleries around the world.
Any Ideas?

Re: New Members: Introduce Yourselves Here, Please
Mon, February 18, 2008 - 1:12 PMHello :) Thank you for all the wonderful introductions, it is nice to see where everyone comes from personally and artistically. I came to this tribe because I have straddled the fence between art and business for years and am always looking to share with and gain knowledge from other artists in this practical world we are faced with. I dance, paint, write and have invloved myself in many other artistic adventures along the way. Looking forward to future discussions!
Best wishes,

Re: New Members: Introduce Yourselves Here, Please
Mon, February 18, 2008 - 3:19 PMHello: My name is Adam Steinberg. I am a writer and fire-performer. I am also teaching myself how to write grants. I have several RFP's at the moment that are waiting to be filled. I am little reluctant to offer my services on a large scale due to the fact that I am so busy with my 9 to 5 and everything else in between. I would be more than happy to point any of you in the right direction and assist but I am not at the point where I would be willing to accept full responsibility for getting you the grant.
Here are a few of the opportunities out there for free grant money. I hope this can help someone out:
1) Creative Capital Accepting Applications for Grants in
Emerging Fields, Innovative Literature, and Performing
Arts
Deadline: March 4, 2008 (Letters of Inquiry)
Founded in 1999, the Creative Capital Foundation
( www.creative-capital.org/ ) is a national nonprofit
organization that supports artists pursuing adventurous and
imaginative work in the performing and visual arts, film/video,
innovative literature, and emerging fields. The foundation is
committed to working in long-term partnership with the artists
it funds, making a multiyear financial commitment, and providing
advisory services and professional development assistance along
with financial support. Funded artists agree to share a small
percentage of any net profits generated by their projects with
Creative Capital, which applies those funds toward new grants.
In 2008, Creative Capital will support artists in Emerging Fields,
Innovative Literature, and Performing Arts. Emerging Fields may
include digital arts, gaming, sound art, architecture, design,
interdisciplinary projects, and new genres. Innovative Literature
may include poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and genre-defying liter-
ary work. Performing Arts may include dance, music theater, exper-
imental music performance, non-traditional opera, spoken word,
theater/performance art, puppetry, and interdisciplinary projects.
To be eligible to apply, an artist must be a U.S. citizen or
permanent legal resident of the U.S.; at least 25 years old;
and a working artist with at least five years of professional
experience.
Visit the Creative Capital Web site for complete program informa-
tion and application procedures.

2) Open Society Institute Invites Photographers and Artists to
Apply for Moving Walls 15 Group Exhibition
Deadline: March 28, 2008
Moving Walls is an annual documentary photography exhibition
produced by the Open Society Institute ( www.soros.org/ ),
a private operating and grantmaking foundation that works to
build vibrant and tolerant democracies whose governments are
accountable to their citizens.
The exhibition series is an artistic interpretation of the
obstacles -- such as political oppression, economic instability,
and racism -- that society often erects, and the struggles to
tear those barriers down. Since its inception in 1998, Moving
Walls has featured nearly one hundred photographers whose work
addresses a variety of social justice and human rights issues.
OSI encourages photographers to submit documentary work of
national or international subjects that coincide with the issues
and geographical areas that are of concern to OSI. Upon selection,
photographers must submit a budget proposal for printing, dry-
mounting, and other miscellaneous costs. In addition, selected
photographers will receive a $1,500 royalty payment.
Visit the OSI Web site for complete program information.

Coastal Counties Restoration Initiative
Deadline: March 24, 2008

in partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration's ( www.noaa.gov/ ) Community-Based
Restoration Program, has announced the second year of funding
for the Coastal Counties Restoration Initiative.
The initiative provides financial assistance on a competitive
basis to innovative, high-quality county-led or -supported
projects. In 2008, CCRI will provide a total of $500,000 in
grants to improve stream, river, estuarine, and other important
marine habitats. A priority area for CCRI is the removal of fish
passage barriers in coastal streams and rivers.
NACo member counties (visit www.naco.org/ and click on

Re: New Members: Introduce Yourselves Here, Please
Thu, February 21, 2008 - 8:31 PMhi,
I'm new to tribe, and I am very interested in how artists get ahead in the field. I try to learn from everyone, but certainly have discovered that some people have opinions and other people have experience. I prefer to listen to the experienced. :)
Looking forward to learning from those here.

Sun, February 24, 2008 - 12:08 PMAlicia,
I went to your webpage to the Gallery section. The images all come up. However, if you click on them (to make them open in a separate window), I, too, receive the 404 error message.
As a note- I tried it in both Safari and Firefox. Perhaps your webpage is fully-workable in only Microsoft?

Re: New Members: Introduce Yourselves Here, Please
Sun, February 24, 2008 - 9:45 PMWhen I click on an active image (with an associated link) I'm assuming that it will lead to a larger version of the image though this isn't always the case. ;-) I browse at home using Firefox on Linux and when I first developed my own web site I tested it on as many odd and old browsers as I could lay my hands on. When I look at my web site statistics I'm amazed at the percentage of people that are using old Netscape browsers and other odds and ends. -

Re: New Members: Introduce Yourselves Here, Please
Sun, March 2, 2008 - 8:47 PMHi there,
My name is Susan AKA ( Magneta) I am an artist from Sydney. I paint images inspired by Folklore, Nature, Fantasy and Symbolism with Acrylic Paint on canvas and have just opened up my first online shop. As I am new to small business Arts related and online related, I thought this tribe might be helpful to see what others are up to in the Arts Biz world.
You can see my main art gallery at www.artwanted.com/susanrodio
and I have just opened a shop on etsy which you can go to via my BIO page at above mentioned site.
thanks.

Re: New Members: Introduce Yourselves Here, Please
Tue, May 27, 2008 - 11:51 AMHello, all. My name's Jen Fridy and I'm a painter and illustrator currently in Kansas City, MO. You can check out some of my artwork and illustration at my personal site: www.jenfridy.com - though it's due for an update. I've shown relatively frequently here in KC, and participated in a few shows in Boston and Brooklyn, but am trying to focus on taking my work to the next level in the next few years. My illustration work has been mostly for alternative newsweeklies, though lately I've done a bit of merchandise/tshirt designs for a few companies and liked that quite a bit.
I love the creative aspect of my work, but hate the business side of things, and have no natural aptitude for it. I joined this tribe in the hopes of getting a few pointers from other working artists about budgeting, marketing, and discipline. Right now I am only making a small supplemental income from my art, but I would eventually like to make my living at it.
As far as what I have to offer, I love talking about art, and I'm fairly articulate about my likes and dislikes --- I enjoy giving and receiving feedback, and I love participating in critique. I also did a bit of time as an alternative newsweekly Art Director, so if anyone wants to know what a harried, underpaid, overworked AD looked for in her submissions, hit me up, yo!
So, howdy! And thanks much!

Re: New Members: Introduce Yourselves Here, Please
Wed, May 28, 2008 - 3:25 PMHi Jen, like your portfolio. :)
I just realized I hadn't introduced myself... :) I've been illustrating since I was pretty young... started because of a love of comic books in 3rd grade and throughout high-school when I was playing roleplaying games, I was always the artist of the group. These days I'm focusing mostly on comic strips or "cartooning" and recently put up a new site at www.woohooligan.com?a=tribe . I'm also not very good at business -- or at least I don't perceive myself to be. I've been doing this all by the seat of my pants. Would love to have an agent.
